Papers of the the Howard family of Rockingham and Augusta counties, Va., contain correspondence, 1868-1918, and financial and legal documents, 1818-1957. Correspondence chiefly conveys family and local news. Specific topics include sentiment for Seymour in the election of 1868; life of immigrants in Indiana including a mention of a large and destructive storm, 1884; an 1877 murder trial in Harrisonburg; a brief references to the assassination of Garfield; and prospects in Florida, 1882. Financial and legal papers include accounts; receipts; promissory notes; an 1873 deed for Rockingham County land; and some Rockingham County school bills and receipts. James Garfield, twentieth President of the United States, was born in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, in 1831. After embarking on an academic career, he joined the Ohio volunteer infantry regiment, and in 1863 was appointed Major General in the same regiment. He served as a member of the U. S. House of Representatives from 1863 to 1880, when he was elected President.
